On Friday Nevada joined Oregon and 16 other states and the District of Columbia in a federal lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Education (DOE). The lawsuit, filed June 4, is over changes to Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 (Title IX), a law barring discrimination based on sex in education.
The lawsuit accuses DOE Secretary Betsy DeVos and these new changes of undercutting Title IX with policies bolstering the rights of students accused of harassment, raising the evidentiary requirements for student victims, narrowing the definition of misconduct, and allowing student victims to be questioned at live hearings, among other changes.
